Speaker Dismisses Allegations of Assassination Attempts Against LOP Ssenyonyi

The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon.Anita Among halted Iganga Municipality MP Peter Mugema, from raising concerns about reported assassination attempts against Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi.

Mugema had sought clarification from Ssenyonyi regarding statements he allegedly made about threats to his life.

“I heard my Leader of the Opposition yesterday on TV saying that they want to assassinate him, and I am not comfortable with [it],” Mugema stated.

However, Speaker Among dismissed Mugema’s claims, describing them as “baseless” and directed him to cease discussion on the matter. Among questioned the credibility of such allegations, stating, “Who can kill the Leader of the Opposition? Stop playing in the gallery! Who is Ssenyonyi?”

Among stated that issues regarding personal safety must be reported to the police rather than being debated in Parliament. “Let us not play to the gallery. If there is any assassination attempt, you go and report to the Police,” she asserted.

The Speaker’s remarks highlighted previous instances where claims of assassination attempts were raised within the parliamentary setting. Notably, Speaker Among herself had previously expressed concerns about her own safety, and MP Connie Galiwango from Mbale had similarly voiced fears and requested increased security.
