ISO, UBOS Ensure Preparedness for 6th National Census

Deputy Director General of ISO, Col Emmy Katabazi, conveyed this assurance while addressing over 700 local government officials

The Internal Security Organization (ISO) and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) have assured Ugandans of their readiness to successfully conduct the forthcoming national census, scheduled for May 2024.

Deputy Director General of ISO, Col Emmy Katabazi, conveyed this assurance while addressing over 700 local government officials from various districts, cities, and municipalities across the country. These officials had recently completed a training session conducted by UBOS at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala in preparation for the census.

Col Katabazi urged the officials to ensure effective data collection during the census to aid in the strategic planning for Uganda’s citizens.

He emphasized the importance of thorough planning, stating that inadequate planning can negatively impact the local population.

Furthermore, Col Katabazi highlighted that the data collected during the census would not only inform national planning but also contribute to ensuring the security of Uganda.

He reiterated ISO’s commitment to the census, mentioning that all personnel, including Regional Internal Security Officers (RISOs), District Internal Security Officers (DISOs), and Gombola Internal Security Officers (GISOs), have been instructed to actively participate in the exercise.

Chris Mukiza, the Executive Director of UBOS, disclosed that the census would be digitized, including payments to enumerators, to eliminate middlemen costs. The training aimed to equip officials with the necessary knowledge to conduct an effective census and to prepare them to train lower-level officials and enumerators.

Mukiza stressed the significance of the census in providing comprehensive information for national planning and emphasized the need for enumerators with smartphones, registered national IDs, and mobile money numbers in their own names.

He further specified that each enumerator would be responsible for counting between 50 to 80 households and stated that preparations for the census were nearly complete.
