Police in Kwania have arrested a woman for impersonating a captain from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF from Gadafi barracks to defraud the public.
The suspect currently in police custody at Kwania Central Police Station (CPS) has been identified as Tracy Byaruhanga.
Police says she was arrested at a local pub in Aduku Town Council called Freedom Bar on Monday after police detectives led by the Kwania District Police Commander tricked her.
Byaruhanga attempted to con Shillings one million from Rtd Captain Alex Omara and others.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson explained that the DPC lured the suspect to the bar under the guise of giving her the money.
“Indeed she came in the company of the GISO Aduku Town council Mr. Okello Geoffrey and as soon as she saw the police, the lady started threatening the officers claiming she was going to call the RDC but she failed to do it when an opportunity was given to her to make the call,” he said.
Okema further explained that upon searching the suspect, they didn’t find any identification on her but rather found weird things such as tree roots, and feathers.
“We searched her bag only to discover some items like 5 smoking pipes, some tree roots, and feathers, which are attributed to acts of witchcraft. Also in her possession was a small plastic bottle of Uganda waragi, which she forcefully grabbed from an officer and drank,” he said.
According to Okema, the investigation has commenced and upon conclusion, the suspect will appear in court for impersonation contrary to Sec 381 of the Penal Code Act. Adding that investigations are also being done on the connection between the woman and the office of Kwania Resident District Commissioner.
In June last year, Dokolo police arrested Francis Wece and Omara Juma, both residents of Agwata sub-county for impersonating UPDF officers. The duo was arrested from Adwoki Trading Center donning a UPDF uniform.
Similarly, in August, police arrested Stephen Aine 39, a resident of Lira City West Division who claimed to be a retired Colonel. He is currently battling charges of aggravated defilement and child trafficking.O
