VP Alupo Urges Teachers to Prioritize Values Beyond Exams for Uganda’s Future”
The Vice President, Rtd Major Jessica Alupo, has encouraged educators to move beyond mere exam preparation, urging them to utilize schools as platforms for nurturing children across various disciplines essential for their future well-being.
Addressing head teachers during a workshop at the National Leadership Institute-Kyankwanzi, the VP expressed concern that an exclusive focus on exam results, devoid of instilling fundamental values and the right attitude, jeopardizes the nation’s future.
Alupo underscored the significance of imparting values such as unity, work ethic, and transformation alongside academic success.
“Passing exams without fundamental values and the right attitude is placing the future of the country at great risk,” emphasized the VP during the workshop at the National Leadership Institute-Kyankwanzi.
As the Katakwi district woman MP, Alupo reminded teachers of their pivotal role in shaping societal discipline due to their extensive interaction with the younger generation, stressing that discipline results from proper training.
Encouraging educators to prioritize this aspect, she highlighted its role in fostering Uganda’s democratic culture.
The diligent Vice President, guiding head teachers on responsibilities beyond their professional duties, further stressed the importance of environmental protection as an expression of love for the country.
“The love for our country entails a commitment to safeguarding Mother Nature. Environmental issues can no longer be overlooked. As educators, let us instill a sense of love and care for the environment, including water bodies, mountains, soils, forests, pastures, and more. These elements are crucial for our survival, and neglecting them is unacceptable,” advised Alupo.
She also urged all teachers to value their profession, describing it as a noble service. Alupo emphasized that choosing a career in teaching should not be solely driven by personal ambition but viewed as a passionate and revolutionary calling to serve humanity.
“There is no price you can attach to the sacrifices teachers make; it should be your choice and patriotic calling. Therefore, if teachers are to deliver on this task of molding and mentoring the young, they must, first of all, love the profession, but most importantly must LOVE the children they teach,” Alupo added, highlighting that for young people to develop love and care, they must feel loved and cared for by their teachers, parents, and the government
