Veteran MP Margaret Baba Diri Passes Away at 70

Margaret Baba Diri, one of Uganda’s longest-serving Members of Parliament, has passed away at the age of 70. She reportedly died on the afternoon of January 9, 2025, while en route to the hospital.

Born on June 29, 1954, Baba Diri began her career as a teacher at St. Charles Lwanga Koboko from 1976 to 1990. She later served as a gender development officer at the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) between 1992 and 1996.

In 1996, she transitioned into politics, representing persons with disabilities in Parliament. Throughout her five terms, she also served as the Woman Member of Parliament for Koboko District. Her tenure was marked by her dedication to education and sports, serving on relevant parliamentary committees.

Despite losing her sight in 1990 due to glaucoma, Baba Diri remained a steadfast advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. She was instrumental in efforts to improve accessibility and opportunities for disabled individuals in Uganda.

Her passing is a significant loss to the nation, particularly to the constituents of Koboko District and the disability community, whom she represented with unwavering commitment.

Funeral arrangements and official statements from Parliament are expected to be released in the coming days.
