URA Intercepts Phones Worth UGX 200M in Smuggling Bust at Entebbe Airport
The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) intercepted 781 smartphones and 108 button phones valued at approximately UGX 200 million (USD 55,000) at Entebbe International Airport.
The seizure comes amidst heightened intelligence and enforcement operations to curb smuggling.
The intercepted phones, including brands like Samsung, iPhone, Infinix, Tecno, Oppo, and Huawei, were concealed in various ways, such as deep within suitcases, disguised as personal baggage, and even strapped onto smugglers’ bodies. Others attempted to evade detection by conspiring with airport staff, including trolley pushers and cleaners.
In an offficial statement released on Wednesday, URA stated that smuggling of mobile phones has become a significant issue at Entebbe Airport, driven by traders seeking to evade taxes. Import duties on phones include a 10% duty, 18% VAT, 6% withholding tax (WHT), and 1.5% infrastructure levy, as stipulated in the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA) 2004.
URA clarifies that enforcement was bolstered by advanced tools like CCTV surveillance, non-intrusive scanners, and a robust passenger profiling system. The agency’s comprehensive approach ensures that offenders face penalties, including fines up to 50% of the value of concealed goods under Section 202 of the EACCMA.
Acting on intelligence, URA emphasizes the importance of compliance and sensitization to prevent future offenses. Travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with customs clearance procedures to avoid fines and potential legal action.
“The aim is to protect revenue and maintain fairness in trade. Ignorance or greed should not undermine our economy,” the statement reads in part.
