UPDF soldiers kill former M23 rebel fighter in Kisoro
A Congolese national and former M23 rebel fighter was killed by Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers in a night operation to crack down suspected criminals in Kisoro District in western Uganda.
The police spokesman for Kigezi region, Mr. Elly Maate, on Thursday told Daily Monitor that an SMG riffle number 1970 KT4733 with 12 rounds of live ammunition was recovered from the deceased, Aloyse Ndayambaje, 33, and it was handed over to the police in Kisoro for further investigations.
Mr. Maate said the incident happened at Gakoro village, Bunagana parish, Muramba Sub County at around 10 pm.
“This suspected criminal fired at our forces when they asked him to surrender. Our forces put him out of action. Police visited the scene and took the body to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem where it is yet to be picked and handed over to the relatives,” Mr Maate said.
He added that Ndayambaje was a notorious criminal operating between Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda borders. He would allegedly cross borders steal people’s property.
