UPDF Soldier Killed After Deadly Shooting Rampage in Kasese
A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier was shot dead after a violent rampage in which he allegedly attacked his colleagues, injuring one and killing another.
The soldier, identified as Isaac Lukwag, was stationed at the UPDF Mountain Combat and Operations Brigade Camp in Rusese, Kasese District.
The incident reportedly began when Lukwag entered a fellow officer’s quarters, seized a firearm, and opened fire. During this initial attack, another soldier, identified as Alebu Joel, sustained injuries. Lukwag then fled the scene, taking two guns with him, and made his way to Kamukumbi Camp, located on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At Kamukumbi Camp, Lukwag continued his violent spree, fatally shooting a fellow soldier named Solomon Kule. When other UPDF personnel attempted to disarm him, a firefight ensued. Lukwag was eventually subdued after an intense exchange, which ended in his death.
Shuja Maj Biral Katamba, spokesperson for the UPDF Mountain Combat and Operations Brigade, confirmed the incident, stating that the injured soldiers have received medical treatment and are expected to recover. UPDF authorities are investigating the motive behind Lukwag’s actions and the sequence of events that led to the tragic outcome.
The UPDF leadership has condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the fallen and injured soldiers.
