UPDF Probes Suicide as Soldier Shoots Self in Wakiso-Mpigi
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is conducting investigations into the death of Lieutenant Amon Ariho, who allegedly shot himself on Wednesday afternoon.
Lt Ariho, who served under the UPDF Engineering Brigade, reportedly drove to Nakirebe, a location between Wakiso and Mpigi districts, where he stopped at a football playground, asked the players to vacate, and then took his own life.
According to Maj Charles Kabona, Spokesperson of the UPDF First Division, Lt Ariho was driving a black car with registration number UBJ 493 Q.
“He pulled his SMG rifle from the car and committed suicide. Our soldiers from a nearby detachment, alongside the police, rushed to the scene, cordoned it off, and recovered his phone and documents from the vehicle,” Maj Kabona explained.
The body of the deceased was transported to Mulago mortuary, while his gun and vehicle were handed over to Mpigi Police for further analysis.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the root cause of this unfortunate incident. We strongly condemn such acts in the strongest terms,” Maj Kabona emphasized.
The UPDF has called for patience as investigations continue and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the mental well-being of its personnel.
