UPDF High Command Discusses Security Situation in the Country
President Yoweri Museveni who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on Tuesday convened the High Command and Defence Council, the country’s top military organs, in a meeting believed to have been called to review the security situation in the country.
The Nile Wires on Monday exclusively published the story after the president called the meeting that took place at State House Entebbe.
Our sources reveal that the meeting chaired by Mr. Museveni discussed security challenges caused by refugees and the issue of too many churches and religious groups harboring criminal minded people.
Uganda has an open refugee policy which has been praised internationally, with some players praising Uganda for hosting the refugees.
Uganda hosts about 1.15 million refugees; 785,000 from South Sudan, 284,000 from DR Congo, 33,000 from Burundi, 22,000 from Somalia, 14,000 from Rwanda and 14,000 from other countries, including Kenya, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Eritrea and Pakistan.
The high-level meeting attending by top UPDF chiefs also discussed the weaknesses in immigration whereby officials issue passports and National Identity Cards to non-Ugandans.
Meanwhile, the High Command resolved to use Operation Wealth Creation to end insecurity that is fuelled by unemployment and poverty.
It was also resolved that the LDUs that were recruited last year should reinforce the security in Kampala and surrounding areas.
The High Command includes army officers who were in senior positions in 1986 when the then rebel National Resistance Army captured power.
