UPDF Deserter Arrested in Tororo for Illegal Possession of Firearm
Police in Tororo District have arrested John Okumu, a former Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier, on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and live ammunition. The suspect, a resident of Kisoti village in Mwello sub-county, was apprehended at his home in Kisote North village following a tip-off from concerned individuals.
A search conducted at Okumu’s premises led to the recovery of a firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition. Authorities have expressed alarm over the potential security risks posed by Okumu, who is reported to have a history of troubling behavior and unexplained travels.
Bernard Obbo, the LC3 Chairperson of Mwello Sub-county, criticized the district security committee for previously ignoring reports about Okumu’s possession of a firearm. Obbo revealed that even Okumu’s own brothers had raised the alarm about his activities, but no action was taken until now.
“This situation could have been prevented if earlier concerns were addressed,” Obbo stated, urging authorities to be more proactive in handling security threats.
Payasi Opio, the LC3 Chairperson of Nagongera Sub-county, stressed the importance of keeping a close watch on army deserters, who often pose significant risks to community safety. He appealed to residents to report any suspicious activities, particularly those involving individuals exhibiting aggressive or threatening behavior.
Moses Odell, the LC3 Chairperson of Pajwenda Town Council, called for the establishment of local security committees to address threats posed by individuals like Okumu. “Community vigilance and coordination are key to ensuring safety,” Odell emphasized.
Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson Moses Mugwe confirmed that Okumu is currently being detained at Tororo Central Police Station. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to face charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
