UPDF Confirms Intelligence Operations Amid Terror Threat
Security forces have intensified measures and issued guidelines following a terror alert issued by the U.S. Embassy on Saturday.
The alert warned of a potential terrorist attack in Kampala, advising American citizens and United Nations personnel in the country to exercise increased caution in public areas such as shopping malls, schools, and popular tourist spots.
The threat, according to the U.S. Embassy, originates from the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), confirmed that the security agencies were aware of the threat and had already launched undercover intelligence-led operations.
“Silence does not mean there are no threats. We do not disregard what our allies say because we are allies in the war against international terror,” he stated.
Uganda Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma also addressed the media on Monday, stating that the threat is being taken seriously.
He called on the public, particularly those operating in malls, schools, and transport hubs like bus and taxi parks, to remain vigilant and follow the security guidelines issued.
“Malls should heighten and maintain access control measures, ensuring people are checked in public transport areas,” Kituuma advised.
He urged passengers and operators to report any suspicious persons or items to the police immediately.
Despite the heightened alert, most public spaces in Kampala remain busy, with people going about their daily activities.
Security at key locations, including bus parks like Namaiba Bus Park, has been notably increased. Each bus company has been instructed to have security personnel with detector machines at entrances, checking passengers and their luggage before boarding.
This is not the first time that foreign missions in Uganda have issued terror alerts. However, security forces are on high alert and are not taking any chances this time.
