The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has completed a new bridge linking Nyamizi Cell in Kihanda Sub-county to Kakoni LC1 in Nyarugunda Parish, offering long-awaited relief to residents who have struggled for years to move goods and access essential services.
The project, executed by the UPDF Engineers Brigade at a cost of Shs 50 million, is one of the community support activities being rolled out ahead of the 45th Tarehe Sita commemorations.
For many years, farmers in the area have faced difficulties transporting produce such as bananas, coffee and cattle to nearby markets. Families also grappled with risky crossings during the rainy season as they attempted to reach health centres and schools on the opposite side of the valley.
Maj Albert Mukama, who leads the UPDF Engineers in the Kigezi region, said the bridge was designed using a practical, low-cost approach that relies on materials available within the community — mainly timber and stone. Despite the simplicity, he emphasized that the structure meets military engineering standards and is sturdy enough to carry even heavy vehicles.
He noted that the team has previously built similar bridges, including in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, that have successfully supported trucks and tankers. Maj Mukama estimated the lifespan of the new structure at 20 years or more, provided residents maintain it well.
Local leaders say the bridge has transformed a long-standing community challenge.
Area chairperson Kintu Henry recalled years of hardship, including tragic incidents in which children lost their lives while attempting to cross the stream using makeshift paths after heavy rains. He said the new bridge has restored safety and renewed hope for the residents.
UPDF Director of Civil-Military Cooperation, Brig Gen Micheal Kibuye, commended the engineering team for completing the work in under a month. He said the bridge is one of several ongoing community projects across Kigezi as part of this year’s Tarehe Sita engagements.
The bridge is expected to be officially handed over to the community on January 6, 2026.
