The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) contingent serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has been urged to maintain heightened security awareness and sustained combat readiness in response to the complex and unpredictable operational environment.

The call was made by the UPDF Contingent Commander, Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, while addressing officers and soldiers deployed in AUSSOM Sector One. Brig Gen Kayanja emphasized that constant vigilance is critical to mission success and the safety of personnel. “All troops must remain alert and prepared at all times,” he said, underscoring the need for proactive security measures and continuous readiness across all units.

He further highlighted discipline and teamwork as key pillars in defeating the enemy and achieving operational objectives, reminding troops that unity of purpose and mutual respect are essential in a multinational and multi-unit deployment such as AUSSOM. “We come from different units, but here we operate as one force. We must respect one another,” he noted. Brig. Gen. Kayanja commended the troops for their professionalism and dedication, urging them to uphold UPDF core values while executing their duties in support of peace and stability in Somalia.

Also addressing the gathering, the Sector One Deputy Commander, Colonel Francis Obita Aragamoi, called on officers and soldiers to embrace perseverance, endurance and patience, describing these qualities as defining attributes that distinguish soldiers from civilians.

Col. Aragamoi drew inspiration from the legacy of the National Resistance Army (NRA) patriots, whose resilience and sacrifice, he said, laid a strong foundation for the UPDF’s achievements at home and in regional peace support operations. “The spirit of the NRA patriots should continue to guide us as we carry out our mission with determination and discipline,” he said.

The engagement brought together senior and junior officers, as well as non-commissioned officers, providing a platform to reinforce command guidance, strengthen cohesion and reaffirm the UPDF’s commitment to the AUSSOM mandate.

The UPDF remains a key contributor to the African Union mission in Somalia, playing a vital role in enhancing security, supporting stabilization efforts and enabling Somali security forces to assume greater responsibility for the country’s long-term peace and stability.
