UPDF Aims For Gold In Africa Military Games As Team Heads To Nigeria
A 27-member team from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has been flagged off to represent Uganda in the 2nd Africa Military Games, held in Abuja, Nigeria.
During the flag-off ceremony at the Land Force Headquarters in Bombo, the Joint Staff Headquarters Brigade Group, Maj Gen Dr Joseph Lucky Kidega, expressed his appreciation to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his dedication to ensuring UPDF’s participation in the African Military Games.
Wishing the team success, Maj Gen Dr Kidega encouraged them, stating, “Go well and come back with gold.”
Brig Gen Richard Karemire, head of the delegation and Joint Staff Formal Education, Sports, and Culture, remarked, “The team will not only be competing to win but will also embody the African brotherhood that unites us,” underlining their role as UPDF ambassadors on an international stage.
The African Military Games were first held in 2002 in Nairobi, Kenya, where the UPDF achieved silver and bronze medals.
Also present at the event were Brig Gen Mwanje Ssekiranda, Chief of Staff-Reserve Force; Brig Gen Hassan Kimbowa, Adjutant Land Force Headquarters, and other senior officers.
