The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 1 Infantry Division has appointed Brigadier General Fred Mwesigye as its new Deputy Commander, marking a leadership transition during a pair of handover ceremonies held this week.
Brig Gen Mwesigye takes over from Colonel Wingston Mugarura and simultaneously relinquished command of Tokoora 1 Brigade to Lieutenant Colonel Jemba Ssejemba.
Presiding over the twin ceremonies, Major General Stephen Mugerwa, Commander of the 1 Infantry Division, praised Brig Gen Mwesigye for his commitment and outstanding service. He also welcomed Lt Col Ssejemba, encouraging him to follow in the professional footsteps of his predecessor.
Colonel Mugarura expressed heartfelt appreciation for Maj Gen Mugerwa’s guidance and support, calling him a “memorable commander” who had significantly shaped his military journey.
Senior and staff officers of the division attended the event, underscoring its significance within the UPDF’s leadership structure.
