The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has called upon the Electoral Commission to enhance public awareness and sensitization efforts regarding electoral activities, especially those related to the Special Interest Groups (SIGs), ahead of the 2026 general elections.
According to the set electoral timeline, public servants intending to participate in the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees elections must resign by Monday, 28th April 2025. The nomination of village SIG Committee candidates for Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and the Youth is scheduled for Monday, 2nd June 2025. Polling for these committees will commence on 16th June 2025.
UPC spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon has emphasized the importance of thorough civic education to ensure that citizens are fully informed about the electoral process. She urges all Ugandans, particularly those belonging to the SIGs category, to take note of the scheduled dates and adequately prepare, especially with regard to the 28th April 2025 resignation deadline for public servants wishing to contest in the SIGs Committees elections.
“This exercise is crucial as some leaders in the past have lost their positions due to failure to comply with the resignation requirement. We would not want any leaders to suffer the same fate when there is still ample time to act accordingly,” she stated.
Arach further noted that the UPC is in the final stages of updating its electoral roadmap for the 2025/2026 general elections. This roadmap will guide the party’s activities leading up to the national polls, including grassroots mobilization, internal elections, selection of flag bearers, and formulation of campaign strategies.
Additionally, Arach called on all party leaders and members to intensify efforts in mobilizing and registering new members. This mobilization drive, launched by Party President Hon. Jimmy Akena in February, is aimed at strengthening the party’s presence and support across the country.
