UPC Pays Tribute to the Late Cecilia Ogwal, Recognizes Her Role in Advancing Democracy in Uganda
Uganda People’s Congress Party President Jimmy Akena asserted that the late Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament, Cecilia Ogwal, championed democratic ideals not only in Uganda but also across the entire East African Region. Akena conveyed these sentiments during a press conference held at the UPC Head Office in Uganda House, Kampala, on Wednesday, where he paid tribute to Ogwal.
“UPC acknowledges and appreciates the late Hon. Cecilia Ogwal’s significant role in advancing democracy in Uganda,” he stated.
Akena highlighted that under the leadership of his late father, Dr. Milton Apollo Obote, UPC nurtured Cecilia Ogwal into a true democrat and a patriotic Ugandan during the 1980s.
“UPC was the pioneering government in empowering women like Cecilia Ogwal to assume political leadership positions. No other party had achieved this, not even the Democratic Party (DP), which is the oldest political party in Uganda,” he emphasized.
Addressing the state of health service provision in Uganda, Hon. Akena expressed confidence in the country’s skilled medical professionals globally but urged the government to attract Ugandan doctors back to address chronic diseases like cancer.
Recalling his father’s illness treated in a South African hospital, Hon. Akena remarked, “I was pleasantly surprised to witness numerous Ugandan doctors offering their expertise when my father was admitted to a South African hospital.”
Cecilia Ogwal, who succumbed to cancer in an Indian hospital last Thursday, is scheduled to be laid to rest at her marital home in Kole District on Saturday.
