UPC Calls for Government Action Against Environmental Encroachers

The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has urged the government, through the Ministry of Water and Environment and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), to take action against individuals or companies encroaching on wetlands and forests.

According to the party, the effects of climate change caused by these encroachments are tangible, evident in the increased rainfall and floods.

During the party’s weekly press release on May 15, 2023, at Uganda House in Kampala, UPC spokesperson Sharon Arach Oyat stressed the need for stringent enforcement of environmental regulations by the government and all stakeholders.

“We have observed people constructing in wetlands and forests; notable examples include Namanve, formerly a swamp now transformed into an industrial hub, and Mabira Forest, depleted by the presence of hotels, schools, and cottages. NEMA must enforce strict regulations on these influential individuals who are degrading our environment because nature spares no one when it strikes,” Ayat remarked.

She also advised citizens to prioritize personal hygiene, cautioning that the ongoing rains across the country could lead to waterborne diseases such as cholera, resulting in loss of life.

“The rains have already impacted areas like Karamoja, Bugisu, Dokolo, Kasese, and parts of Entebbe, leading to road closures and fatalities. We urge citizens to uphold good hygiene practices, as these floods often bring waterborne ailments like cholera,” she emphasized.

Recently, the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness and Management, in conjunction with the Ministry of Water and Environment, issued warnings to residents residing near water bodies and hills, urging them to relocate due to anticipated heavy rainfall and flooding
