Unity is Key – Museveni to Kisoro Residents.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni delivered a powerful message to the people of Kisoro on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, as he campaigned for the NRM candidate, Ms. Rose Kabagyeni, in the by-election for Woman Member of Parliament.

Museveni urged the residents of Kisoro to put aside religious differences and embrace unity, peace, and togetherness for the collective good of the district and the nation.

Speaking with conviction, Museveni acknowledged the historical religious divides in Kisoro but emphasized the need to reject any conflict driven by these differences.

“Unity is the foundation of development,” he said, stressing that religious distinctions should not disrupt the shared vision for progress.

To reinforce this message, Museveni met with prominent local leaders, including Mzee Philemon Mateke, Bishop Rev. Mbitse, and Bishop Bubaramira, encouraging them to lead by example and foster peace within the community.

Following his campaign message, President Museveni made a heartfelt visit to the home of the late Hon. Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, former Minister of State for Defence and Woman MP for Kisoro District, who passed away on September 7, 2024.

Honoring her legacy, Museveni offered condolences to her family, which included her father, Dr. Philemon Mateke, an influential NRM leader in Kisoro. He expressed his sorrow at the loss of a respected leader who had made a “significant impact” on her community and left a lasting legacy.

In his tribute, Museveni laid a wreath in memory of Hon. Mateke and offered words of comfort to the bereaved family.

“Mateke was like a daughter to me,” he said, recounting her dedication to public service and the good she brought to her community. His words highlighted not only his personal connection to the late minister but also his commitment to support her family during this difficult time.

Dr. Mateke expressed deep appreciation for Museveni’s visit, noting that it was a significant honor to the memory of his daughter and her work. “Your presence here brings us comfort,” he told the President. “It means a great deal to our family that you have come to honor Sarah’s memory.”

The visit underscored Museveni’s dedication to both honoring longstanding relationships within the community and promoting a vision of unity in Kisoro as it moves forward, particularly in the context of the upcoming by-election. The people of Kisoro were reminded that peace and unity are paramount, especially as they face new leadership opportunities and challenges.
