UNEB Unveils Sample Assessments for New Lower Secondary Curriculum
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has unveiled sample test papers and a continuous assessment tool for the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC).
During a two-day stakeholders meeting on NLSC assessment in Kampala, Executive Director of UNEB, Dan Odongo, emphasized that the aim of the sample materials is to provide guidance to schools regarding the new Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) formats.
“These tools offer schools reassurance and insight into the assessment process. However, the sample papers merely serve as prototypes of what may be expected in the final end-cycle assessment. The actual scenarios will likely differ,” Odongo explained.
Ismael Mulindwa, the Ministry of Education and Sports’ Director for Basic and Secondary Education, emphasized the meeting’s relevance, as it engaged key stakeholders with diverse roles in NLSC implementation.
Florence Buyinza Agola, the Manager of Examinations Development, highlighted the NLSC’s objective of nurturing lifelong learners capable of adapting to a dynamic world. She underscored the importance of holistic learning, along with valid and reliable NLSC assessment, for producing quality graduates, stressing the necessity of full stakeholder participation.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, including commissioners and assistant commissioners, as well as ministry and regional inspectors from the Directorate of Education Standards (DES), were among the attendees at the meeting.
