The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has announced the postponement of the UCE transition examination based on the old curriculum to October/November 2024.
This decision comes following extensive consultations and engagements with District Education Officers (DEOs), aimed at ensuring a fair and effective transition for students.
In a notice issued by UNEB’s Executive Director, Daniel Odongo, dated February 27, 2024, it was revealed that the postponement was advised by the Minister for Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni.
Minister Museveni expressed concerns that the original timeline of June/July 2024 for the transition exams would not provide sufficient preparation time for repeater students. Additionally, she highlighted the financial constraints faced by Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools in covering examination fees for these students.
“As a result, the government will now cover the examination fees for repeater students registering in USE schools. Repeater students are encouraged to register at USE schools convenient for them, as examination centers may vary. Both existing examination halls and private schools accommodating repeater students will facilitate the registration process.” Odongo states
Odongo further clarified that the transition exams will coincide with the 2024 UCE exams set under the new curriculum. He added that registration for repeater students will occur concurrently with the normal registration process for 2024 sitting candidates.
A total of 14,879 candidates who fell short of requirements in the 2023 exams, which marked the final year of the old curriculum’s implementation, are eligible to retake the exams. This marks the last opportunity for these students to sit for exams under the old system, as the implementation of the new curriculum has been fully phased in.
