The National Examinations Council (UNEB) has officially released the schedule for the 2024 final examinations across various levels of education.
The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations for students following the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC) will commence on Friday, 11th October 2024, and conclude on Friday, 8th November 2024. Meanwhile, students sitting for the UCE under the Transitional Examination of the Old Curriculum will also begin on Friday, 11th October 2024, wrapping up on Friday, 15th November 2024.
For the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), candidates will start their examinations on Monday, 4th November 2024, with the final paper scheduled for Thursday, 7th November 2024.
Finally, the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations are set to begin on Friday, 8th November 2024, and will end on Friday, 6th December 2024.
Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive director says a total of 1,320,400 students will sit for this year’s examinations, marking an 8% increase from the 1,224,371 candidates in 2023.
Female students make up 51% of the candidates, while male students account for 49%.
He reveals that 798,763 candidates candidates will participate, in the PLE exams reflecting a 6.6% increase compared to 749,371 last year. A total of 379,620 students will sit for the examinations. This includes: 369,477 students following the New Curriculum and 10,143 students adhering to the Old Curriculum.
The New Curriculum students will commenced their examinations with the first morning Maths paper, followed by the Chemistry paper. In contrast, students following the Old Curriculum started with the open Chemistry paper and participated in Music yesterday.
As for Senior Six (UACE), 142,017 candidates will take their examinations, which represents a 28% increase from 110,579 last year.
The UNEB ED notes that there are 4,498 candidates with disabilities, 108 inmates (107 boys and 1 girl).
He explained changes in exam subjects for S.4 students under the new curriculum which includes 36 subjects as compared to the old one that will take exams in 46 subjects.
Odongo further explained that candidates will have the option to sit for examinations in languages such as Luganda, Soga, Rutoro, Runyakole, Rukiga, Teso, Lango, Choli, Lumasaba, Sign Language, and more while available foreign languages include German, Arabic, Chinese, Latin, French, among others.
Odongo has dismissed reports claiming that UNEB has issued a directive banning Boda Boda riders from conducting examinations in various regions of the country.
