Uganda’s Strategic Commitments to SDG Implementation Highlighted at UN Forum

Prime Minister Nabbanja Robinah informed global leaders that Uganda has developed six strategic commitments through extensive national and sub-national consultations aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and driving socio-economic transformation.

She made these remarks during a presentation at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the 11th meeting held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Nabbanja stated that to achieve these commitments, the Government of Uganda will integrate them into the Fourth National Development Plan (2025–2030), which aligns with the end of the SDGs in 2030.

She highlighted the need to enhance national and local financing mechanisms, strengthen partnerships for localized SDG efforts including citizen participation, and bolster the National Statistical systems.

Flanked by the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Nobert Mao, Nabbanja addressed several issues raised by different countries. She emphasized that Uganda has implemented various mechanisms to tackle challenges related to adverse weather and climatic changes.

Responding to concerns about civic space raised by civil society organizations, Minister Mao affirmed that Uganda is governed under constitutional rule.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister spoke on behalf of the G77 + China, assuring world leaders of their commitment to attaining the SDGs.

She reiterated the necessity for financial reforms to accelerate SDG implementation among member states.

Nabbanja affirmed that G77 + China would support all efforts aimed at achieving the 2030 Agenda.

The Premier also held bilateral talks with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, at his office in New York, discussing ways to strengthen working relations with Uganda.

Uganda is one of the few countries selected worldwide to present on the progress of SDG implementation, benchmarking achievements made so far. The country has enhanced its monitoring and reporting mechanisms on SDGs, increasing the number of indicators with data points from 41 in 2019 to the current 127.

At the midpoint of implementing the 2030 Agenda, Uganda has made significant gains in SDG implementation, including progress in reducing both monetary and multidimensional poverty among the population.
