Uganda’s economy a credit to NRM policies – Museveni
President Yoweri Museveni who is also the NRM presidential flag bearer kicked off his scientific campaign meeting in the greater Kigezi sub-region with assurances to Ugandans that because of the NRM right policies, the country has been recognised as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
The President was meeting leaders from the four districts of Kabale, Kisoro, Rubanda, and Rukiga who commended the NRM government under his stewardship for the development programs extended to their area.
“The wisdom and policies of the NRM government have made Uganda one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Unity, Peace, a strong army, and pro-private sector policies are what has made Uganda the 5th fastest growing economy in the world according to Bloomberg group,” Museveni said.
He added that it is the same environment that made one investor describe our nation as a 3 P country that is Peaceful, Pleasant, and Profitable.
According to a Bloomberg report, the economies of Ethiopia, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya withstood the economic impact of the pandemic so successfully that they were among the world’s 10 fastest-growing in 2020. At least five of them are expected to remain in that elite growth club through 2022, according to forecasts by economists compiled by Bloomberg during the past three months. Two years ago, Africa included only three of the best performers and in 2015 it had four.
The President gave the delegates a brief political history of Uganda that had leaders who were only promoting identity instead of the common interests of the people. He said the NRM government stood for the interest and needs of the people that is why many industrial parks have now been opened regionally to provide employment to Ugandans.
He said the same investors also help the government by paying taxes whose funds are used for infrastructure development and for solving other social needs of Ugandans.
Museveni also cited the growing industry by indigenous Ugandans like Aponye Group that deals in produce and employs over 250 Ugandans.
“If we had many more Aponyes in Uganda the problem of employment would be solved,” he noted.
The leaders of Kabale, Kisoro, Rubanda, and Rukiga in their memoranda thanked Museveni for the good road network in the region.
“Your Excellency, the people of Kigezi region are very happy for the roads that have been tarmacked- from Kabale-Rubanda-Kisoro and the road from Ntungamo-Kabale-Katuna and others whose construction is on-going,” said the NRM chairman for Rubanda district Apollo Negamahe who read the memorandum.
The meeting took place at Kabale Municipality Stadium and was attended by Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, ministers, MPs Flag bearers, and delegates from the districts of Kigezi region.
Negamahe said they are very excited about the completion of the 6MW Muvumbe electricity dam in Maziba that will provide them with power.
They also thanked President Museveni and the NRM government for the peace in Uganda, for granting Rukiga and Rubanda district status, and the health services now enjoyed by the people of the region. The people of Kigezi are also thankful to the President for the modern market that is being constructed in Kabale.
