Ugandans Urged to Adopt Commercial Farming for Economic Growth
The NRM Vice National Chairman for the Central Region, Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi, has urged Ugandans to adopt smart and commercial farming practices to boost productivity and improve their families’ welfare.
Kiwanda made this plea yesterday during his visit to coffee farms in Kikandwa subcounty, Mityana North County, in Mityana district. He commended the farm owners for employing modern technologies like solar energy for irrigation during dry spells.
His call aligns with President Museveni’s advice for Ugandans to transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture.
“I advise farmers to actively seek knowledge and guidance from extension workers in their subcounties to produce both food and generate income,” said Kiwanda.
Additionally, Kiwanda invited farmers from greater Mubende districts to participate in a two-day agricultural expo dubbed ‘Kisoboka’, meaning ‘It is possible’, where they can interact with experts on smart farming methods to boost yields.
During the expo, farmers will collaborate with agro-input dealers or manufacturers to devise strategies for increasing production and productivity among those still practicing subsistence farming.
“The issue for Ugandans isn’t solely the price of agricultural products; it’s also about productivity. How much profit do farmers earn from their produce? The expo aims to address the low productivity of our farmers’ goods,” Kiwanda emphasized.
Samuel Mulumba, a smart farmer from Bukuga village, praised President Museveni for consistently urging Ugandans to not only produce food for sustenance but also for selling. “He has encouraged us to avoid being mere spectators as others prosper.”
Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, the NRM Vice Chairman for the Western Region and Minister of ICT, along with other NRM senior leaders, are expected to attend the Expo to promote the President’s message of embracing the money economy among all Ugandans.
