Ugandan Visionary Dr. Martin Aliker Dies at 95
Dr. Martin Jerome Okec Aliker, a prominent Ugandan dental surgeon, businessman, and community leader, has passed away at the age of 95.
Dr. Aliker played a significant role in various sectors, leaving a lasting impact on Uganda’s business and academic landscape.
Born on October 21, 1928, in Gulu District, Dr. Aliker was the son of Rwot Lacito Okech and Julaina Auma, a descendant of Musa Ali, the first ordained Anglican priest in the Acholi region. He received his early education at Gulu High School before continuing his studies at Kings College Budo for his O-Level studies. Later, he pursued higher education at Makerere University before earning scholarships to study in the United States.
Dr. Aliker’s academic journey led him to Northwestern University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He was also honored as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Returning to Uganda after his studies, Dr. Aliker became a government dental surgeon before venturing into private practice, establishing the first private dental practice owned by an African in Uganda. He also made significant investments in various companies, including Uganda Commercial Bank, National Insurance Company, Stanbic Bank Uganda, and East African Breweries, among others.
Dr. Aliker’s leadership extended beyond business. He served as the Chairperson of Monitor Publications Limited (MPL) and was instrumental in overseeing the merger between Monitor and Nation Media Group (NMG). Additionally, he held advisory roles and sat on the boards of numerous companies, contributing to Uganda’s economic development.
Throughout his life, Dr. Aliker remained committed to education and community service. He served as the Chancellor of Victoria University Uganda and as the founding Chancellor of Gulu University. His legacy as a visionary leader and dedicated professional will be remembered by many in Uganda and beyond.
