Ugandan Traders Stuck as Their Trucks are Denied Entry into Rwanda
Rwandan Authorities at the Katuna Border have blocked Ugandan trucks with various goods from entering the neigbouring country.
This the second time in one month Rwandan authorities are denying Ugandan goods from entering their country.
Three weeks ago, the Rwandan government blocked entry of Ugandan cement that was being exported into Rwanda at Katuna border post.
Government spokesman Mr Ofwono Opondo confirmed that Ugandan traders are stranded with their trucks full of goods at the Uganda-Rwanda border of Katuna/Gatuna.
“It’s true since yesterday 6.00pm the Rwanda authorities have prevented the entry and exit of goods even petty small items like foodstuffs being purchased by their own citizens,” said Mr Opondo in an interview with an online publication — Kampala Post.
He added: “Initially the official reason was that Katuna border was congested and advised travelers and businesses to go through Mirama hills. However, the Rwanda customs claims not to know any other reason and has indeed written to URA to that effect.”
Mr Opondo says that Rwanda customs says it is Rwanda police blocking free movement of goods on all the three border posts ie Katuna, Kyanika, and Mirama hills.
“In the circumstances, Uganda continues to monitor and engage with Rwanda,” he said.
The Kampala Post has seen a letter by the Rwandan authorities claiming that the trucks from Rwanda were blocked to reduce traffic at the Katuna border.
