The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), in partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent, has today launched a large-scale humanitarian meat distribution initiative to mark Eid Al-Adha, the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice.
The initiative involves the slaughter and distribution of meat from 3,100 cows to support vulnerable Muslim communities across Uganda.
The distribution is taking place in two key locations: Isingiro District in Western Uganda, where 1,400 cows are being slaughtered and the meat distributed to vulnerable families, including refugees and host communities; and Bugiri District in Eastern Uganda, where the remaining 1,700 cows are being distributed to underserved households.
Speaking to the media in Isingiro District, John Cliff Wamala, the Communication & Media Relations Officer at the Uganda Red Cross Society, explained that the initiative ensures that less privileged communities are not left behind.
“Communities with refugees, widows, orphans, the elderly, and internally displaced persons are able to partake in the joy and spiritual significance of the occasion. It brings out the essence of this significant day in the lives of the faithful,” Wamala said.
“This initiative reaffirms the values of humanity and solidarity that define the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. We are deeply grateful to our partners at the Turkish Red Crescent for their unwavering generosity and continued support,” he added.
All activities under the initiative are being carried out in accordance with cultural, religious, and public health guidelines to ensure the dignity, safety, and respect of all beneficiaries.
The Uganda Red Cross Society has reaffirmed its commitment to serving the most vulnerable and upholding human dignity, particularly during times of religious and cultural importance.
Muslims at Ruhimbo Mosque in Kabingo Town Council, Isingiro District, applauded the Red Cross for the initiative, highlighting the timeliness of the support during these challenging economic times.
“I have a neighbor who didn’t know how his family would celebrate Eid Al-Adha, but now he has a clear picture of how the day will be spent,” said Ismael Mucunguzi, a resident of Ruhimbo.
Dr. Robert Nimwesiga, the Veterinary Officer for Isingiro Town Council, confirmed that all cows involved in the initiative were thoroughly inspected and cleared for slaughter.
“We have thoroughly examined the health of all the cows, and they all qualify for slaughter and distribution. We have ensured that every portion of meat is properly stamped before it is distributed,” Dr. Nimwesiga said.
Districts in Western Uganda—including Isingiro, Lyantonde, Sheema, Kiruhura, Rakai, Ntungamo, Ibanda, and Mbarara—will benefit from this humanitarian initiative over the next three days.
