Uganda Prisons Water Disconnected Over Unpaid Bills Worth UGX18b
The Uganda Prisons has revealed that water supply at Luzira Prisons Complex has been disconnected due to outstanding arrears amounting to UGX 18,272,450,274, Eighteen billion, two hundred seventy-two million, four hundred fifty thousand, two hundred seventy-four Uganda shillings.
According to a notice released by Frank Baine, Prisons Spokesperson, the disconnection, which occurred on August 13, 2024, was executed by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC).
Baine explains that despite efforts by the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MoFPED) to address the situation specifically by releasing UGX 2,355,351,000 in the first quarter of the 2024/25 fiscal year, this amount was insufficient to cover the total outstanding debt.
However, an outstanding balance of 5,640,904,000 is yet to be released.
He states that UPS has tentatively deployed water bowsers to provide water to prisoners and staff at Luzira and negotiations are ongoing between the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, UPS, and NWSC to resolve the situation and restore normal water services.
Baine has urged both prisoners and staff to remain calm as long-term solutions are being sought.
