Uganda has taken a step toward health and financial inclusion with the launch of its first-ever micro-health insurance product tailored for Savings Groups, including refugees and host communities. The launch, held on Wednesday, at Fairway Boutique Hotel in Kampala, was led by Mercy Sande Ainomugisha, CEO of VisionFund Uganda.
Designed specifically for members of Savings Groups, including refugees and host communities, the product offers health insurance coverage valued at up to UGX 700,000 for an ultra-low premium of only UGX 600 per month. This initiative is aimed at cushioning low-income families from the devastating financial impact of medical emergencies—a critical step in improving household resilience in Uganda’s rural and underserved regions.
“This launch is not just the introduction of a product,” Mercy said during her keynote address. “It is a powerful statement of VisionFund Uganda’s mission to create brighter futures for children by offering accessible, relevant and impactful financial solutions to the communities that need them most.”
The launch came just days ahead of World Refugee Day, observed on Friday, underscoring the product’s alignment with efforts to promote inclusive social protection for displaced populations and their host communities.
The innovation is the result of a strategic partnership with Turaco Microinsurance, whose commitment to reaching underserved populations with last-mile insurance solutions was widely praised during the event.
The occasion drew support from an array of high-profile stakeholders and partners. Representing the IRA UGANDA was Mr. Obel Bernard, Director of Supervision, on behalf of CEO Al Haj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega. The OPM was represented by Mr. bafaki charles.

Key representatives from VisionFund Uganda’s shareholders—VisionFund International and World Vision Uganda—represented by Damas Filied, Dip CII, Africa Regional Insurance Manager at VisionFund International and Jeremiah Nyagah, National Director of World Vision Uganda respectively also attended.
