The Vice President, Rtd . Gen. Jessica Alupo, has officially unveiled the Digital Transformation Roadmap Initiative.
This is a significant development led by the Ministry of ICT and Information, along with the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNDP Uganda and Centenary Technology Services (Cente-Tech).
This initiative is expected to bring about a transformative change, emphasizing inclusivity and progress. The ambitious digital transformation goals set by the government for 2030 encompass broad modernization efforts, including achieving 90% broadband coverage.
A core aspect of this roadmap is its focus on inclusivity and empowerment, with a special emphasis on bridging the digital gap that has historically disadvantaged individuals in remote and marginalized communities.
This launch is aligned with the Digital Uganda Vision and demonstrates a commitment to translating aspirations into actionable steps. This initiative is also in line with UNDP’s focus on leveraging innovation, digitalization, and finance to drive development.
Alupo, emphasized the role of digital technology in bridging the gap between rural and urban citizens, striving for an equitable and progressive Uganda.
She said government is progressing towards a digital based economy hence building a Digital Uganda that empowers young men and women to lead the way and to transform this country.
“Government has clearly guided before and is guiding now that for our country to transform, we must have jobs, services and ICT”.Our Government’s commitment is steady. We acknowledge that ICT is more than a sector; it is a catalyst that will infiltrate every aspect of our lives, industries, and institutions” She said
She pledged to foster a conducive environment that will galvanize the private sector, civil society, and every citizen towards achieving this collective objective.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT, Amina Zawedde, highlighted the significance of this launch as a moment of pride and optimism for the nation.
She noted that digital transformation is an ongoing journey of improvement built upon existing achievements noting that this initiative aligns with the government’s goal of digitalizing Uganda, a pledge in its manifesto.
She adds that this transformative blueprint will create a Uganda where digital technology becomes a powerful equalizer between rural and urban citizens, leaving no one behind in our pursuit of progress and prosperity.
Chris Baryomunsi, the ICT Minister, stressed the importance of digitalization for Uganda’s future, noting that the country’s trajectory is digital and that embracing this agenda is essential.
The Minister of Education and Sports, Chrysostom Muyingo, emphasized that digital training for all learners is essential to equip them for the technological landscape of the 21st century.
This initiative is also in line with UNDP’s focus on leveraging innovation, digitalization, and finance to drive development.
The launch of Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap marks a pivotal step toward a more digitally empowered and inclusive nation. The collaborative efforts of various ministries, UNDP Uganda, and Cente-Tech show the commitment to making Uganda a leading force in digital progress, education, and economic growth.
The government has already taken significant strides in promoting and implementing ICT as a catalyst for digital transformation, in line with Uganda’s Vision 2040 to strengthen the nation’s economic foundation.
