Uganda Heightens Surveillance As Marburg Virus Hits East Africa

The Ministry of Health has raised the alert following the ongoing Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak in East Africa.

In a press statement issued on 30th September 2024, the ministry assured the public that while no cases have been reported in Uganda, precautionary measures are being enforced to safeguard citizens.

According to the statement, the ministry is adhering to International Health Regulations and is closely monitoring the situation.

“We are taking proactive measures to protect the health of Ugandan citizens,” the release noted.

The Ministry has strengthened national disease surveillance systems to ensure rapid detection of any potential cases.

“This includes working with health facilities nationwide to swiftly identify, isolate, and manage potential cases, ensuring the safety of the public,” said Dr. Olaro Charles, representing the Director General Health Services.

As of now, Uganda has not reported any Marburg cases. However, all public health emergency protocols have been activated, with the ministry urging citizens to follow strict hygiene practices, including regular handwashing with soap or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers.

The Ministry also emphasized the importance of early reporting. Citizens are encouraged to visit the nearest health facility if they experience any symptoms such as acute fever, severe headache, general body weakness, or unexplained bleeding.

The public is advised to remain alert for the following symptoms: acute onset of fever, severe headache, general body weakness and unexplained bleeding from any part of the body

Additionally, any unexplained deaths accompanied by these symptoms should be reported to the nearest health facility or through the Ministry of Health toll-free line: 0800-100-066. Alternatively, reports can be made via SMS by typing “Alert” to 6767 for emergencies.

The Ministry of Health has called for calm, urging Ugandans to remain vigilant but reassured that the situation is being handled with utmost priority. All preventive measures aim to ensure public safety while keeping Uganda free of the Marburg virus.

For further information, the public is encouraged to reach out to the Ministry of Health’s Public Relations Unit through the provided contact details.

This development comes as the ministry continues to track health threats across the region, with Uganda taking proactive steps to mitigate potential outbreaks.
