New Law Requires Teachers to Reknew Licences Every Four Years
In light of the recently approved National Teachers’ Bill of 2023, Uganda will no longer permit any teacher to operate without a license. The decision, made during the weekly Cabinet meeting on Monday, was unanimously agreed upon by the Ugandan Cabinet.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance explains that the new law mandates teachers to obtain licenses every four years.
The primary objective of this new law, as stated by Dr. Baryomunsi, is to promote, maintain, and uphold ethical standards within the teaching profession. Furthermore, he emphasized that teachers must engage in ongoing professional development to renew their licenses.
“Teachers’ licenses will be renewed every four years, subject to proof of their participation in professional development,” Dr. Baryomunsi affirmed while addressing the media regarding the weekly Cabinet decisions.
This initiative to regulate the standards of teachers stems from the National Teachers Policy of 2019, providing an institutional framework to execute decisions related to matters concerning teachers.
The bill’s formulation also pays close attention to teacher qualifications. It recommends that a Bachelor’s degree be the minimum requirement for both primary and secondary school teachers.
