Uganda Celebrates as Alison Akello Claims Second Runner-Up at Miss Tourism Africa 2023/24

Uganda’s pride, Alison Mary Akello, made history on October 1 by securing the second runner-up spot at the prestigious Miss Tourism Africa contest, held in Lagos, Nigeria. The grand finale, hosted at the Landmark Centre, brought together some of the most talented and beautiful women from across the continent.
In addition to her remarkable placement, Akello also earned the coveted Miss Popularity title, a testament to her charm and dedication throughout the competition, particularly during the Bootcamp phase.
Before the final showdown, contestants participated in a rigorous Bootcamp, engaging in various activities, workshops, and rehearsals. Akello skillfully used social media to rally support, urging Ugandans and well-wishers to vote for her on the competition’s platform.
“I deeply appreciate the overwhelming support from Ugandans who voted for me and promoted me online,” Akello expressed her gratitude to her supporters.
Busingye Vanita, a passionate and renowned Tourism Queen, played a key role as the National Director of Miss Tourism Africa, guiding Akello to shine on the international stage.
The competition was won by Ndinelago ‘Ndina’ Emosho from Namibia, who took home the Miss Tourism Africa 2023/24 crown along with a cash prize of €2,000 (about Shs7.3 million). Emosho, 27, also impressed the judges with her national costume, winning the Best National Costume award.
Uganda’s Akello stole the spotlight in the popularity vote, amassing an impressive 465 online votes, outpacing her closest competitors from Mauritius (368 votes), Chad (321 votes), Mozambique (100 votes), Kenya (53 votes), Nigeria (42 votes), and Côte d’Ivoire (30 votes).
As both second runner-up and Miss Popularity, Akello has cemented her role as a tourism ambassador for Uganda, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Her achievement serves as an inspiration to the next generation of Ugandans, encouraging them to take pride in their country’s attractions.
