Uganda and Italy Reaffirm Commitment to Defence Cooperation

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, met with His Excellency Mauro Massoni, the newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Uganda, this afternoon at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Entebbe.

The discussion centered on mutual interests between Uganda and Italy, with both leaders acknowledging the long-standing historical ties between the two nations and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

Although Uganda and Italy have maintained diplomatic relations for many years, the signing of a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation in 2020 significantly enhanced this relationship. This agreement has paved the way for deeper collaboration in areas of security and defense, reflecting the mutual interests of both countries.

Gen Kainerugaba extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Massoni, marking their first encounter since Massoni’s appointment. Ambassador Massoni succeeded Ambassador Massimiliano Mazzanti, whose term in Uganda ended last year. The meeting was seen as a crucial step in continuing the strong diplomatic and defense ties established by their predecessors.

The cordial meeting highlighted the shared goals and cooperative spirit between Uganda and Italy.
