The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has summoned top media executives for an emergency meeting following concerns over the increasing broadcast of hate speech, misinformation, and sensational content across radio, television, and online platforms.
In a letter dated February 25, 2025, addressed to leaders of various media associations, UCC Executive Director Hon. Thembo Nyombi warned that unchecked content is fueling public disharmony, spreading hatred, and inciting violence.
“The Commission has noted with concern the continued broadcast of content that contains hate speech and is creating disharmony among the public. Such content is increasingly sensational, spreading hatred, false information, and is capable of inciting violence among the population,” Nyombi stated in the letter.
Nyombi further stressed the need for media houses to exercise greater editorial responsibility, warning that authorities will not hesitate to take action against those violating broadcasting standards.
“Media platforms have a duty to inform, educate, and unite the public. However, we are seeing a worrying trend where some outlets are amplifying divisive narratives that threaten national security and social cohesion. We urge all broadcasters to reflect on their role in shaping public discourse responsibly,” he added.
Nyombi further stated that the National Security Council has also raised similar concerns, warning that such content poses a threat to national stability.
The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 9 AM at UCC House in Bugolobi, will be attended by officials from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, security agencies, and government representatives.
Media CEOs are expected to attend in person, as the Commission seeks to engage stakeholders on measures to curb the spread of inflammatory content while ensuring media freedom is upheld within the legal framework.
Leaders of key media associations, including the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Rural Broadcasters Association (RUBA), Uganda Media Owners Association (UMOA), Independent Online Journalists Association of Uganda, and Online Media Publishers Association (OMPA).
