Police in Kabale are holding two of its officers for allegedly robbing a Rwandan businessman.

The suspects including Police Constables Gracious Tusiime, 25, and Zechariah Ekiyankundire, 26 were deployed at Katuna border police station in Kabale district.

Preliminary findings from police indicate that the duo targeted and robbed money from one businessman of Rwandan descent identified as Thomas Habanabakize, 38, and a resident of Rwambu village, Gicumbi district, Northern province, Rwanda.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, the incident happened on March 1, 2024, when Habanabakize crossed into Uganda through the Gatuna-Katuna border with 85,000 Rwandan Francs (about 260,000 Ugandan Shillings).

Maate explains that the suspects stopped the businessman and demanded to check him. They later accused him of attempting to circulate fake money after noticing how much cash was in his possesion.

Habanabakize failed to purchase his goods from Katuna because the officers allegedly threatened him with guns and took all his money. Habanabakize was told to go back to Rwanda or face serious consequences

Maate further explains that the victim reported the matter to Rwandan authorities and Uganda police has since arrested the officers.
