Two Babies Reportedly Suffocate to Death in Tororo Hospital

Locals in Tororo district have called on relevant authorities to investigate the mysterious death of two babies at the Neonatal Unit in Tororo General Referral Hospital.

It is alleged by anonymous sources at the hospital that the two babies suffocated as a result of negligence from hospital staff. They claim that the health worker on duty was absent from ward for a long period of time and this could have caused the minors to suffocate, for lack of attention and proper aeration.

It is also alleged that parents to the infants were present in the ward when the deceased babies suffocated. The parents reportedly asked health workers to put the babies on oxygen but they rejected the move under unclear circumstances.

On Wednesday, locals led by Albert Amula, a district leader camped at the hospital to protest the deaths the negligent acts exhibited by the hospital staff and authorities. Amula expressed disappointment that a government facility would let such a thing happen, saying it is a disgrace to the society.

The has led the Tororo Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) to demand an investigation into the allegations and bring those responsible to book.

Meanwhile, the hospital superintendent  Dr. Thomas Ochar, has issued an apology  and pledged an audit into the incidents.

He however expressed concern about the limited number of staff deployed at the maternity ward saying only seven nurses work there and they are overloaded.

“The maternity wing, housing the Neonatal Unit, has only 7 nurses. On the day of the incident, 2 were on annual leave, one was sick, and the one scheduled for duty did not show up.”
