Police in Kasese are holding two individuals on charges of illegal entry and trespass into Queen Elizabeth National Park, a protected conservation area in western Uganda.
According to Rwenzori East police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime, the suspects—identified as Benson Muhindo, 25, and Benon Twinomujuni, 34, both residents of Kasenyi fish landing site in Muhokya Town Council—were apprehended by authorities after allegedly entering the park without authorization.
“Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances under which the suspects entered the protected area,” SP Tumushime said. He added that the suspects will be presented before the courts of law upon conclusion of the inquiries if sufficient evidence is established against them.
The police spokesperson also issued a warning to communities living near national parks, urging them to respect conservation boundaries. “Illegal entry into gazetted areas is a serious offense and punishable under the law. We call upon residents to cooperate with conservation efforts and avoid activities that threaten wildlife and protected ecosystems,” Tumushime emphasized.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s premier wildlife reserves, home to a diverse range of species including elephants, lions, hippos, and over 600 bird species. Illegal human activity poses a significant threat to the park’s ecological integrity and ongoing conservation programs.
The suspects remain in custody at Kasese Central Police Station as investigations continue.
