Troop Draw-down: Ugandan Army Chief Warns Of Losing Gains in Somalia
The Ugandan Chief of Defense Forces Gen David Muhoozi has warned that Amisom forces may not be able to consolidate gains against the militant group Al-Shabaab as the AU forces gradually withdraw from Somalia.
General Muhoozi said in a meeting with European Union Heads of Delegation in Kampala that AMISOM forces have registered tremendous achievements which may be lost with the draw-down of troops.
Gen Muhoozi on behalf of other AMISOM Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) appreciated the partnership and requested the EU not to tire but continue the support to AMISOM.
The CDF was speaking during a meeting with a delegation of European Union Ambassadors led by H.E Attilio Pacifici at the UPDF and Ministry of Defense Headquarters, Mbuya on Monday.
“The situation on the ground should be the main factor for consideration when making decisions on the security in Somalia,” he emphasized.
He noted that whereas he understands the fact that there might be donor fatigue, the withdraw of troops from Somalia should done with carefully to ensure the enemy forces do not reverse the gains by AMISOM forces since the Alshabaab are in the wings and waiting for any opportunity to takeover territories secured by AMISOM forces.
The CDF’s remarks are in line with the resolution that authorises a gradual troop reduction in Somalia and transfer of national security responsibilities from AMISOM to Somali national security forces.
Gen Muhoozi has severally called for united training of Somali National Army (SNA) so that it is empowered to handle its security woes in the wake of the draw-down of troops.
