Tragic Loss: Humphrey Mayanja, Brother to Jose Chameleon Succumbs to Cancer
After enduring months of battling cancer at the Mulago-based Uganda Cancer Institute, Humphrey Mayanja, the elder brother of singing brothers Jose Chameleone, Pallaso, and Weasel Manizo, has passed away.
Humphrey, who was in his late 40s, underwent surgery in the United States before recently being brought back to the country for further treatment, surrounded by family and friends.
The news of his passing came through on Saturday morning, casting a pall over the Mayanja family’s Easter weekend.
Last year, Humphrey recounted the harrowing ordeal that led to his hospitalization in the U.S., beginning with sporadic fainting spells and sudden fevers.
“This is not a pleasant picture. I didn’t take it. But while at Schiphol airport, I kept falling asleep and waking up to intermittent fevers. I didn’t feel well, and I have never felt like that before. The flight was delayed, but after 10 hrs of layover, I was finally on the flight to Logan airport. I got home safe (or so I thought). I got some rest, but when I woke up, I realized that my stomach was inflating itself every 5 mins,” Humphrey shared in a social media post last year.
“This was so painful that I could not walk or eat anything. ‘My Best friend’ decided to drive me to the ER, I got diagnosed and a decision was made that I be retained for further analysis. They immediately inserted a Nasogastric tube (very irritating process) inside me. Believe me or not basokoola kakika mu lubuto nange n’entya. Anyway, it all ended in surgery,” he added at the time.
Humphrey explained that the treatment involved inserting a nasogastric tube into his stomach to eliminate the infections inside, but the doctors ultimately performed a full surgery.
