Traffic Police Arrests 331 Driving License Defaulters in Recent Crackdown

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has intensified its operations against driving license defaulters and boda boda violations, revealing alarming statistics from the past week and the first half of 2024.

According to traffic spokesman Kananura Michael, a recent operation targeting driving licenses resulted in the arrest of 331 defaulters. Out of these, 75 were driving without licenses, 107 were driving out of class, and 149 were driving with expired licenses.

In a simultaneous crackdown on boda boda violations, a total of 787 riders were apprehended for riding without crash helmets and reflective jackets. Kananura emphasized that these operations will continue to ensure compliance and safety.

Kananura further says that from January to June 2024, the Directorate conducted extensive sensitization activities across the country, targeting all road users, including taxi operators, bus drivers, lorry drivers, pedestrians, school-going children, market vendors, and places of worship. The efforts included 1,126 engagements, comprising 19 television talk shows, 326 radio talk shows, and 1,081 physical engagements aimed at promoting behavioral change.

Kananura also highlighted the issue of unclaimed motorcycles parked at various police stations, particularly in the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area. He urged members of the public to retrieve their motorcycles, as most have no pending investigations. Those with motorcycles held due to log book issues with banks are encouraged to visit the stations to resolve the matter and reclaim their vehicles.

The public is reminded to report traffic violations and other complaints via the toll-free number 0800-199099.
