As the Easter season approaches, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has announced a nationwide enforcement campaign to reduce road crashes, injuries, and fatalities during the busy holiday period.
Speaking to the press, SP Michael Kananura, spokes person of the Directorate, extended Easter greetings to Ugandans and urged caution on the roads.
“Easter is a time of joy and reflection, but we also acknowledge that it is one of the busiest periods on our roads,” he said. “Increased travel often results in higher traffic volumes and avoidable crashes that can lead to loss of life.”
In response, the Directorate is launching an intensified enforcement operation with increased patrols and checkpoints across the country. The crackdown will focus on unlicensed drivers, vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition, drink driving, reckless driving behavior, non-compliance with designated bus routes, and improper vehicle number plate display.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all road users. This season, our officers will be vigilant and proactive in identifying and penalizing those who flout traffic rules,” Kananura stated.
He emphasized key safety guidelines: no drinking and driving, adherence to speed limits, mandatory use of seatbelts and helmets, avoiding mobile phone use while driving, respecting traffic signs, and being cautious near schools, markets, and pedestrian crossings.
Kananura also made a strong appeal to the public: “To passengers, speak out against reckless driving. Your voice could save lives. To drivers, remember that every decision you make behind the wheel affects many lives, including your own.”
The public is encouraged to report reckless driving and road safety violations using the toll-free line 0800199099.
