Traffic Diversion Announced Ahead of Mpigi Interchange Works
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced a planned traffic diversion along the Kampala-Masaka highway to facilitate the construction of an interchange at Mpigi. UNRA, in a notice issued on Monday, disclosed that work on the interchange is set to commence on January 29, 2024.
As part of the 35Km Busega-Mpigi Expressway project, UNRA aims to enhance transportation infrastructure. The construction of the interchange will lead to a redirection of motorists heading to Masaka, Lyantonde, Mbarara, and beyond.
They will be redirected at the Total Petrol Station in Mpigi to Mpigi Town roundabout, rejoining Masaka Highway at Kalagala (3.5 km). Similarly, motorists heading towards Kampala will follow the vice versa route.
UNRA emphasized that preparations for the traffic diversion, including directional signage and safety measures, have been implemented to minimize inconvenience and ensure smooth traffic flow during the expected eight-month construction period.
Prior to the commencement of construction, UNRA urged all road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic signs, and follow the guidance of traffic management personnel on the ground.
The 35Km Mpigi-Busega Expressway project, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation in Joint Venture with China Railway 19th Bureau Group (U) Ltd at a contract sum of Shs547.5 billion in 2016, was originally scheduled for completion by 2021. However, delays were attributed to geological and technical issues, with UNRA’s Executive Director, Allen Kagina, explaining that the original alignment posed challenges with the railroad and settlements, leading to a shift to the edge of the swamp.
Upon completion, the Busega-Mpigi Expressway is expected to improve traffic flow on the Northern Corridor, connecting Mombasa Port to DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi through Uganda
