Police have confirmed the deaths of three people and injuries to over 30 others following a tragic bus accident on the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District on Monday evening.
According to the Ssezibwa Region Police Spokesperson, Hellen Butoto, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:00 PM on May 5, 2025, in Makindu Village. A Scania bus, registration number UAV 701C, belonging to YY Coaches, was travelling from Katosi en route to Jinja when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid a boda boda rider, lost control, and overturned. The bus subsequently burst into flames.
“Three people were burnt beyond recognition at the scene,” Ms Butoto said on Tuesday morning. “The number of fatalities may rise as investigations continue to determine the total number of passengers who were on board.”
More than 30 survivors sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kawolo General Hospital, St. Charles Lwanga Hospital, and other nearby health facilities in Buikwe District for emergency medical attention.
Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura also confirmed the incident and described it as a “single fatal road crash.” He noted that police and emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire and recover the remains of the deceased.
Authorities are still in the process of identifying the victims and verifying the actual number of passengers. The investigation is ongoing.
