Ten NUP Hopefuls Scramble for Kawempe North MP Seat
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has finalized the nomination process for candidates vying for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat, which fell vacant following the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya in January.
Among the latest entrants is Lusswa Mohammad Luwemba, a former personal assistant to the late MP, who officially submitted his credentials today before the NUP Electoral Committee. He was accompanied by Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana.
According to NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, ten candidates have expressed interest in the party’s flag Umar Magala, Erias Nalukoola, Mathias Mulumba,Moses Nsereko, Fredrick Katika, Salim Sserunkuuma, Charles Rubagumya Kenneth Ssekungu and Lusswa Mohammad Luwemba
According to the Election Management Committee (EMC) will finalize the expression of interest process today, Tuesday, February 3, 2025. The official party flag bearer will be unveiled the following day, Wednesday, February 4, 2025.
The selection process will be twofold: A public debate among the aspirants, accounting for 50% of the evaluation.
A ground survey to assess candidates’ popularity and suitability among voters in Kawempe North, contributing the remaining 50%.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced March 13, 2025, as polling day. According to the EC roadmap, nominations for candidates will happen between February 26-27, campaigns on February 28-March 11 and Polling Day on March 13.
The EC has urged candidates and their supporters to maintain peace during campaigns and respect the rules of the electoral process. It has also invited election observers to apply for accreditation and encouraged public input to ensure a transparent process.
