Ten Dead as Tanker Collides with Passenger Taxi in Bugiri

Traffic police have confirmed that ten people died in a tragic accident involving several vehicles along Iganga -Tororo highway on Monday evening.

The crash occurred on the 11th of March, 2024, at 07:50 PM at Kibimba after the bridge along Iganga-Tororo Highway in Bugiri District. The accident involved trailers and a passenger taxi.

According to Micheal Kananura the Traffic police spokesperson, preliminary reports indicate that a Toyota Hiace Reg. no.963M, passenger taxi tried to overtake a queue of vehicles including a Mercedes Benz Actros trailer, Mercedes Benz Axor trailer, Toyota land cruiser, and another Toyota Hiace.

He explains that most of the vehicles were moving in the same direction towards Tororo, except for a tanker loaded with molasses, which was heading in the opposite direction towards Iganga.

Kananura further states that the passenger taxi attempted to overtake a queue of vehicles and swerved left upon noticing the oncoming tanker. Unfortunately, the tanker, unable to avoid the collision, hit the taxi, causing it to be squeezed against another trailer Benz reg. no. KBJ 155C/ZD 2621. The tanker then lost control, overturned, and caught fire.

He reveals that ten people died on the spot including eight passengers of the taxi, the taxi driver, and the driver of the tanker. The bodies have been taken to Bugiri Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

Kananura says the five of the vehicles involved have been towed to Muwayo Police Station pending inspection, while the tanker loaded with molasses remains at the scene, guarded, pending offloading.
