Tayebwa Highlights the Role of Sports in Advancing EAC Integration
The Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has emphasized the potential of sports as a vital tool for driving the East African Community (EAC) integration agenda.
Tayebwa noted that sporting events bring together Members of Parliament (MPs) from the EAC’s eight partner states, fostering closer ties and collaboration in achieving the objectives of deepening, widening, and strengthening the integration process.
“Sports play a critical role because many MPs in the region are unfamiliar with each other, yet they are tasked with enacting laws essential for the integration process. Through these events, we are now much closer at the level of people’s representatives,” Tayebwa remarked.
He made these comments ahead of leading Team Uganda in the golf tournament at the 14th EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games, held on Tuesday, 10 December 2024, at the Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa, Kenya.
Tayebwa also expressed his appreciation for the participation of Kenya’s President, William Ruto, who officiated at the opening ceremony of the EAC Games in Mombasa.
He viewed this as a significant demonstration of commitment from the region’s leaders toward the integration process.
“I hope the executives in the partner states will build on this momentum. It means a lot for the integration agenda.
We are ready to support and promote this initiative, address the challenges faced by each country from the perspective of their representatives, and strengthen parliamentary democracy,” he said.
