Tanzania PM Majaliwa Reports 155 Deaths in Devastating Floods
Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, informed parliament in Dodoma that 155 individuals have tragically lost their lives due to the relentless floods triggered by heavy rains.
The devastating impact of the floodwaters extended to over 200,000 people across 10,000 households, causing damage to infrastructure, properties, and crops.
The heavy El Nino rains, coupled with strong winds, floods, and landslides, have wreaked havoc, resulting in significant loss of life, destruction of homes, properties, crops, and infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and railways.
Prime Minister Majaliwa emphasized the dire situation, with more than 51,000 households and 200,000 people affected, 155 fatalities, approximately 236 individuals injured, and over 10,000 houses damaged to varying degrees.
In Nairobi, 10 bodies were recovered from Mathare River, while two suspected flood victims were found in Kajiado county, all awaiting postmortem and identification at the City Mortuary.
Additionally, eight individuals remain missing in Mathare as search operations continue.
The heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in Nairobi and other regions, displacing over 60,000 residents and disrupting transportation networks. National and county governments, along with humanitarian agencies, urge residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations.
